There is a hidden gem on the north side of Indianapolis and I thought it would be the perfect backdrop for summer mini sessions. It’s an idyllic summertime setting – a rocky creek bed, sunshine filtering through the tall trees, a flowing creek for little toes to splash in – it was the ideal spot to celebrate the end of summer here in Indianapolis.
The end of August could have been a doozy weather-wise, but we really lucked out. It was just hot enough that the cool water was inviting, but not so hot that everyone was sweaty and red-faced. In addition to the magical natural setting, I found an adorable gypsy-inspired macrame hammock to use for the sessions. It was a total last minute idea and I wasn’t even sure if it would work, but it was just as good as I had envisioned. Some of my favorite images from each session ended up being on that hammock.
A creek stomp is a quintessential summer activity with kids, and especially the older kiddos, loved getting wet and dirty in the creek. The kind of joy those kids were experiencing is catching, and I didn’t even have to coax parents to join in on the fun. I think even some dads enjoyed it, and we all know how much dads (and men in general) love pictures.
As I went through editing, I posted a lot of black and white teasers on Instagram. As I posted them, I was reminded of poems I love, quotes from novels, and artists that just seemed to fit with these images. Many of the action shots stirred nostalgia in me. The shadows, contrast, and grain in the images reminded me of snapshots of my own childhood that still pull on my heartstrings. I have no doubt my clients will feel the same when looking back on these. There is a great deal of creative satisfaction when sessions go as well as these did, and doing these reignited the passion I have for true lifestyle photography. I look forward to making these an annual event.
