A few weeks ago I had a really wonderful and special newborn session I had been looking forward to. Katie and Justin came in with their beautiful newborn baby boy Max. They were so excited to introduce us to this little miracle they had waited so long for.

Katie had scheduled a newborn session with me last year. Sadly, she had a miscarriage and lost their first son, Jack. They found out they were expecting baby Max just five months after losing Jack. Katie was so open about her experience and had some beautiful insights into their journey. She talked about how they had always wanted Max, even before they had Jack. She said that Jack “blew open our hearts far and wide. Max fits inside just perfectly.” When I asked her how her pregnancy had been she said, “We like to use the word ‘brutiful’. Anticipating Max couldn’t have been more beautiful. Though navigating the grief from losing Max’s older brother was brutal at times. The crossroads of grieving loss and anticipating arrival is a strange place to be. We embraced each moment feet rooted in faith, and look toward the beauty of both of our boys.”

Newborn sessions are so full of love, that is part of the reason I am so drawn to them. New parents, even second and third time parents, are falling in love with this new little life. Sometimes, as we are falling in love with new life, we are also thinking about life that has passed, life that never was. Katie’s words are an eloquent description of her experience of motherhood, and loss, and love.

Newborn baby boy Max fits perfectly inside their hearts, and he is oh so perfect. I got a lot of sleepy smiles, and he looked great in blue. He couldn’t have looked more peaceful and happy when in Mom and Dad’s arms. You are very welcome to this world baby Max.
